If you have tried many things in life & nothing worked yet, you are totally bewildered about all happenings in and around you, then take a little span of time and separate yourself from the ongoing crowd to have a clear vision of it. See yourself as a life without any academic degree attached to it, striving to have its bread and butter, see, if you have left any stone unturned to earn your living.
You have to show the universe your intent to achieve something. Your desire might not get fulfilled but something wonderful may happen. People often wonder how come the criminals get so much wealth & live a luxurious life although not peaceful by any means. This is because of their intent. Their intention and action are so strong & determined that the universe yields to fulfill their desire. Your decision of not doing something of socially degraded because you are a PhD may keep you penniless forever. Yes, it is demoralizing and unfortunate situation of the country, but you have to avoid the annoying and critical fingers of society to keep yourself alive. Probably you are the most unfortunate person in this world, who hasn't seen the face of LUCK in his life till now but still somehow you have to carry on hoping to see the New Sun of your life. It may turn up anytime, anywhere without you being totally unaware of it. You have to accept the fact that life is not the same game for everyone of us. Probably you are to suffer 1000 times more than your neighbor but you will get wiser who will be a pioneering figure for the generations to come.
They say to burn up our Karma by involving yourself into intense activities as much as possible in whatever amount if time we have. Just do it. Life is a mystery for you, it was & it will remain for ever. No logic fits to it. It's purely illogical & beyond your understanding. Just live it.
